the computers main memory is held on chips.. & the backing memory which is not main memory is called the secondary memory.
the main memory has little ‘storage loactions’.. each of them are identified my their own address.
there are 2 types of main memory; Random Access Memory & Read Only Memory..
RAM; this memory type holds data from input devices, the information will be lost when the computer is switched off & it comes in an easily upgraded form of modules called memory modules.
ROM; this memory type does not lose data when the computer is switched off, can be modified but only slowly and with difficulty & it holds the bootstrap loader of the operating system.
registers are storage locations in the processor which hold; the data being processed, the addresses of the memory locations to be accessed & any instuctions that are being executed. the register contents can be accessed quicker than RAM.
